Yuri Ivanovich Bandazhevsky (63) graduated from the Grodno Medical Institute in Belarus, and became a medical doctor, professor, member of the New York Academy of Sciences. At the age of 31, he became the youngest professor of medicine in the USSR. In 1990, he became the first rector of the Gomel State Medical Institute at the age of 33. After many years of research, he made an official conclusion about the real situation with radioactive contamination in Belarus. In 1999, he was arrested on suspicion of receiving a bribe, later convicted, and was released in 2005. He became the 25th person to receive a Freedom Passport, approved by the European Parliament. He is a honorary citizen of 17 French cities, including Paris. He leads an international research center "Ecology and Health", established in Kiev, conducts research in contaminated areas of Ukraine.
In the end of the seminar, I gave one comment on Tokyo University research team.
I am a freelance journalist who has translated 3 radiation related books. In June 2011, I saw the draft translation on your paper by Mr. Mamoru Kubota and was greatly shocked. I wrote a summary quickly and send them to the Society of Medicine, Society of Heart, Society of Kidney, Society of Liver, etc, but the summary of your paper was totally ignored.
Also, I met Dr. Masaharu Tsubokura, one of the researchers at Tokyo University in person and asked if he read Bandazhevsky paper, and he said, "Yes, as a matter of fact, I feel greatly in trouble. All the foods in Fukushima should be measured, but we don't have enough measuring machines." In Mr. Tsubokura's blog, he said, "From 10Bq/kg, ECG started to show abnormality in Chernobyl." However, after that,
he released a paper at Journal of American Medical Association, which stated that the level in Fukushima was safe even though there are many who went beyond 10Bq/kg!
In another words, experts at Tokyo University knows the truth but have been concealing the truth!
When I stressed on this point, a woman and a man abruptly blocked my speech saying, "We want to ask more questions!"
Their interference was so obvious and the couple apologized saying, "Excuse us during the session..." I thought they were from either from Tokyo University or agent from the government of Japan.
When the seminar was over and the room was cleaned, Dr. Bandazhevsky was collecting his things on the desk, so I went up to him and said,
"Dr. Bandazhevsky, my mother is from Fukushima. I really thank you. Thank you very much." While I was saying my words of gratitude, I couldn't hold back my tears.
Dr. Bandazhevsky went to Gomel to establish the Medical University since Gomel was contaminated and local doctors fled from the town, he also got exposed and became unwell, and some of his students lost their lives, but continued his study.
Dr. Bandazhevsky studies should be prevailed as much as possible.
Thank you again, Dr. Yuri Bandazhevsky.
Health impact after Chernobyl wascaused by inhalation of iodine 131 into
thyroid, massive contamination of the soil and food chain intrusion.

As
a matter of fact, Cs 137 was detected right after the operation of
nuclear power plant, but the promoters kept saying, "it is safe."
Cs emits beta and gamma rays while decaying into Barium, which is highly toxic. There are many papers which shows the toxicity of Barium, too. Especially, when Barium gets into cells, they are very risky.
Cs has chemical toxicity along with radioactive toxicity.
Internal exposure is much more dangerous than external exposure.
However, international organizations are calculating the risk of internal radiation based on the external one.
They say, 1 mSv (equivalent to 600~700Bq/kg) is harmless, but there are health impacts under much lower levels.
No laboratories have been conducting the studies of internal radiation, since that would prove the danger.
Let me briefly introduce my personal history.

For this purpose, I also did animal experiments to find out the relationship between Cs body concentration and diseases.
I established a Cs monitoring system for residents.
(In those days, nobody was doing that and some Belarus companies cooperated for that.)
After my research, nobody in Belarus, Russia, or Ukraine has done a similar research.
Though vast amount of money is being used for reconstruction of Chernobyl, there is almost nobody who can talk clearly on health impacts. (The same in Japan!)

The
former Soviet Union used various ways to conceal the data of
contamination, and residents ate contaminated food without knowing it.
For example, stored beef at Gomel station was contaminated but it was distributed all over the country, and of course the residents didn't know about it.

So
I checked the Cs body concentration of kids both in Gomel and
uncontaminated areas, and found kids in both areas were contaminated.
I was known as the rector of Gomel Medical University in the local society, but when I started my research, local municipal officers started to be away from me.
One
day, I gave my rearch paper to the Minister of Health, then he just put
my paper in his desk drawer. I also sent the same to the goverment.
After that, oppression started against me.

For example, milk cannot be safe at the level of 100Bq/l. The inspector does not say the sample was 98 Bq/l and children drink it without knowing it.

If the child keeps drinking that milk for several days, considerable amount of radioactive materials can be accumulated in his/her body. Can you call this is safe? This is solely a fake declaration of safety.

The
most important thing is to make decisions to protect people from now on
rather than pointing out the past mistakes done by the politicians.
But after the accident, the real situation of contamination had been concealed. Even the accident itself was concealed and on May Day festival, residents including children were mobilized for parades.

I used to stay in a French town called Clemont, where I spent time for
several years comfortably, but I wanted to do study in a contaminated
area, so I went to Ukraine. (Of course I could not go back to my
country.)
Everyone asked for my autograph in the book I published in France (the one I wrote about the issue of radiation and my thoughts while I was in the prison), but I was wondering whether he/she understood what I wrote.

However, the book disappeared from major libraries after the accident.
The book said, "contamination of this level has no risk, but if there is any additional radiation contamination, there should be some urgent measures to be implemented."
The book was found by a strudent in a small library in Gomel. After that, I used that data in official places and cited the figures in the Parliament of Belarus. Then, the chairman of the Parliament said that special attentions should be paid to the rector of Gomel Medical University and several months later, I was dismissed.

In Russia, even now, the figures have been concealed.
Several months ago, when I said in an interview by a Russian reporter, "There had already been contamination even before Chernobyl," that statement was omitted from the article. The chief editor told me that my statement was not credible since there wasn't the book in any library in Russia.
However, the figure is listed on my official site, https://chernobyl-today.org/, where many people can take a look.
What is the people in the authority side scared of ? They kept saying that nuclear power is nothing to be worried about, but if the data before the accident is released, their statement could be proven to be false.

The same thing can be said about IAEA. They say the contamination started only after the Cheronobyl.
In Belarus, the contaminated area in 1974 coincides with the contaminated area since 1986. This information is very important.

Even some people in our side tell me not to talk about the contamination before Chernobyl, since contamination from Chernobyl could be underestimated.

However, I cannot keep silence on the contamination of these areas before the Chernobyl accident.
These areas had been contaminated for 50 years including the years before the Chernobyl accident.
Birth rate decrease had been observed before the Chernobyl accident, but there had been contamination also. Some scholars insist that the birth rate has been decreased even before the accident concealing the pre-accident contamination.

As for cardiovascular diseases, some institutes in Belarus tell the doctors not to write in the medical record.
But in contaminated areas, ischemic heart disease is high.
Cancer incidence rates are higher in rural areas than urban areas, because people in rural areas eat contaminated food more.
Of course, that doesn't mean that urban areas are safe.

While
I was living in Belarus, I was eating normally, and I got sick. I
bought a lot of blueberries in Minsk, the capital of Belarus. I thought
these blueberries were from some surburb of Minsk.
I had food poisoning symptoms several times after eating blueberries (I thought I had food poisoning), but I later knew that the berries came from contaminated areas.

When I checked my body Cs concentraion in Iwankov District in Ukraine, my figure was higher than the local residents, since I had been eating contaminated food.
Cs concentrates more among children.
Especially, accumulation in thyroid is high, so there is a high possibility that Cs is contributing to thyroid cancer. This issue should needs further studies.
For example, children born after year 2000 did not get initial exposure, but there are many thyroid cancer children.
It is very important to know that radioactive iodine is not the sole contributor to thyroid cancer.
There is a possibility that thyroid cancer will be increased from food contamination in Fukushima.
Cs
concentration level result coincided between animal experiments and
those of human beings. Internal organ's concentration was much higher
compared with the average per kg per body.
In a textbook by former Soviet Union, Cs is supposed to accumulate in skeletal muscle, without any further explanation. That is true since the weight of skeletal muscle is much, but as for the concentration, internal organs such as heart is higher.
However, there was nobody who checked the Cs concentration in internal organs.

We studied the congenital malformation caused by multiple factors.

Lead
could be another factor. Lead was massively poured into the reactor,
which was scattered in large volume in the surrounding of Chernobyl.
When we checked the lead concentration in children's blood in various areas, they showed high figures.

I assumed that the high rate of ECG abnormality among Gomel children could be partially attributed to lead.

Currently
in Ukraine, we have been conducting studies to search for other
chemical substances which could be attributable for residents' ill
health. It is quite interesting to know relationship with substances
other than lead.
However, radiation effects are observed most among all the disease indusing factors in contaminated areas.

What are the effects of chelating agents?
Dr: Pectin is a complex problem, and has some negative aspects. It would take long if I explain. I was one of them who started researching pectin, but a researcher from the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in 1992 came and asked me to investigate the effects. He requested a research to us and one of my colleagues earned a degree with a big scale dissertation. In my research, a mixture of pectin and clay adsorbed radioactive material best. It is a drug called Pectpal. I do not know any other material which adsorbs more than Pectal. Since then, no one has informed me about Pectpal. Currently, several laboratories are trying to use several types of pectin.

However, producing pectin agent is difficult. The area between the apple skin and the fruit, which oxidizes quickly, cannot be made if not in a proper facility. When I hear about story where some people are tying to produce pectin agent, I feel a bit doubtful. Another problem is that the effects of pectin on overall metabolism are not well known. What happens to ion exchange in the intestine is not well understood. Its effects are not well understood when it comes to long-term use for children. Therefore, I opposite to use it for people under 100Bq / kg. If you use it for adults for a week or 10 days, I agree. If it is 20-30Bq, I think that it is faster not to newly take in radioactive substances because it gets discharged from our bodies without doing anything.

WBC(ホールボディーカウンタ)の制度の問題は、くだらない話。

I told him that the case of Fukushima children over 10 Bq / kg have been extremely rare since last spring, but Bandazhevsky does not seem to be very convinced.

Looking at this, I also asked Prof. Hayano a quick question. Of course no reply came from him.

@hayano Mr. Hayano, 10Bq / kg or more is dangerous. Especially among children. And how many children are you saying as rare cases? Are you willing to accept some child victims in the future?

Post script,
After some time, amazingly, Prof. Hayano communicated to me on twitter from his side. So I asked him about the 10Bq/kg risk among Fukushima children along with what he thinks about the higher concentration of Cs 137 in younger children that have been argued by Dr. Bandazhevsky.
Though we did had a sort of lengthy communication, he totally avoided answering my 2 most important simple questions in the above, which were also based on Dr. Bandazhevsky's Swiss medical weekly paper. Not being able to gain any answer from Prof. Hayano, I left the twitter conversation with Mr. Hayano as follows. By the way, he made a simple calculation mistake in his paper and he admitted it when I pointed out in the same twitter communication.

Another photo with Dr. Bandazhevsky!
Dr. Bandazhevsky is unwell due to the effects of radiation exposure. He gave his lecture on a condition of taking a break at every 45 minutes. Sometimes he looked very tired.

However, when he spoke his scientific outcomes, I could feel his enormous energy, which was truly impressive!! The energy I feel most from him was ENERGY OF ANGER BASED ON JUSTICE! He is very angry about negligence or injustice. Some people say, "getting angry is bad," but in my view, "getting not angry when an obvious injustice/negligence is being carried out is not humane!" I feel strong sympathy with his anger in this regard.
And actually, I think Dr. Bandazhevsky has a very charming personality by looking at his statement on how to cope with coronavirus, such as, "Sew your own masks or for your family," or "Wash your dog's face and paws with soapy water.."

Newly added on April 19 18:43 (Japan Time) responding to Chernobyl fire!
Health Hazard Today by Dr. Bandazhevsky
"People who are exposed to radiation - toxic effects due to forest fires in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone are potential victims of coronavirus. A study conducted by us during European projects in 2013-2107 revealed that people living in areas affected by fire have increased blood homocysteine levels, indicating a malfunction of several important metabolic cycles. At the same time, blood coagulation increases, contributing to the occurrence of blood clots in the microvasculature of vital organs. The consequence of this is myocardial infarction and strokes. These people are potential victims of the harmful effects of coronavirus. The influence of the latter on the human body is noted by the fact that it also disrupts blood circulation in the lungs and other organs, adversely affects the hematopoietic system, the immune system. People living in areas suffering from the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant have violations in the immune system, which also makes them targets for exposure to viral agents, including coronavirus. The inflammatory process occurs under the influence of not only viral particles, but also microbial agents. A very rapid development of the inflammatory process is associated with a distorted, pathological reaction of the immune system, as a result of which cells of the body are damaged. An important role, in this case, is played by the genetic system. In this situation, it is very important to determine the group risk among the population in terms of viral exposure with the appropriate preventive and anti-epidemic measures."

Dear friends!
I appeal to everyone who hears and sees me. Besides the huge global problem with the coronovirus pandemic. There is a huge fire in the Chernobyl zone. Houses are burning in the villages of Polessky district. Adults and children of all villages of Polessky district, especially Ragovka, Lugoviki, Radynka, Maryanovka, Maksimovichi, and Markovka, suffer from acrid radioactive smoke. The village of Vilcha was completely burned. Many of them may be left without shelter, clothes and food. Radiation smoke negatively affects the human body, especially the child’s body. This is confirmed by an article that we published in a scientific journal. .We attach it. You can watch the sites Chernobyl-health.org, Chernobyl-today.org. There are no personal protective equipment. And help does not have to wait. There are about 600 children in the disaster area. They really need your help !!!!
With respect and gratitude,
