Hypothyroid Mom’s Story of Hope: Her Miracle Babies

“To know the road ahead, ask those coming back.”

One thought that has repeatedly struck me is how much easier my journey might have been if somehow, magically, some of the things I know now I could have known when I was first diagnosed with hypothyroidism, or when my body first whispered a warning to me that something was wrong. Instead, I had to learn those things the hard way. I hope that by sharing my story, my readers who suffer from this disease, and those who suspect they have it, might benefit from my experiences and what I have learned. If my story on Hypothyroid Mom saves the life of even one baby, I will have realized my mission.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism after the birth of my first son in 2006. I trusted my doctors and assumed they were the experts on hypothyroidism, especially when I became pregnant again in late 2008. This will forever be one of the biggest regrets of my life. Under their care my TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) soared far above the safe range for pregnancy endangering the life of my fetus and I miscarried at 12 weeks pregnancy. The day I lost my baby to hypothyroidism, I vowed to research everything there was to know about this disease and warn women everywhere about the dangers. After over three years of intense research and a quest to find the top thyroid health experts, I am in the best health ever. I got pregnant naturally with my second son and gave birth to him in October 2010. Dreams do come true for hypothyroid moms.

WHAT WORKED FOR THIS HYPOTHYROID MOM

1. Get Thyroid Testing Prior To Trying To Conceive

(Living Well With Hypothyroidism: What Your Doctor Doesn’t Tell You..That You Need To Know)』という本に出会いました。

I had the great fortune of coming across a book by best-selling author and thyroid patient advocate Mary Shomon called “Living Well With Hypothyroidism: What Your Doctor Doesn’t Tell You..That You Need To Know”.I loved the book so much I read it in a few days. I realized for the first time in reading Mary’s book that my doctors had no clue about hypothyroidism. I then read her book “The Thyroid Hormone Breakthrough” that helped me understand why I had miscarried due to my underactive thyroid, and how to make sure it didn’t happen again.

Consultation services with Mary changed my life. Using her United States and International Thyroid Top Doctors Directory, I found the thyroid doctor of my dreams.

My doctor did extensive laboratory testing including TSH, Free T4, Free T3, and thyroid antibodies. Her goal was to get my TSH in the range of 1.0-2.0 mIU/L pre-conception. This is in keeping with the Guidelines of the American Thyroid Association for the Diagnosis and Management of Thyroid Disease During Pregnancy and Postpartum:1

RECOMMENDATION 15 –Treated hypothyroid patients (receiving thyroid hormone replacement medication) who are planning pregnancy should have their dose adjusted by their provider in order to optimize serum TSH values to <2.5 mIU/L preconception. Lower preconception TSH values (within the non-pregnant reference range) reduce the risk of TSH elevation during the first trimester.

I also started taking a prenatal vitamin several months prior to getting pregnant and throughout my pregnancy. If you are hypothyroid and taking thyroid hormone replacement, you should not take your prenatal vitamin with iron within three to four hours of taking your thyroid medication. This is because iron interferes with the absorption of thyroid hormone. I took mine at separate times of the day.

Do not assume your doctor has done a full thyroid blood panel. Read my post Top 5 Reasons Doctors Fail To Diagnose Hypothyroidism. Be an advocate for yourself and insist on proper testing. Be sure your doctor is not relying strictly on blood tests for diagnosis and treatment, but also includes an extensive look at your symptoms, medical history, family history and physical examination. The key is finding a great doctor that treats the patient not the lab results.

2. Chart Your Fertility Cycle

While some lucky people get pregnant almost as soon as they start trying, it takes longer for many couples. One good way of increasing your odds is to chart your fertility cycle using your basal body temperature. I am fortunate that I monitored my basal body temperature because I discovered immediately that my cycles were not normal. My basal body temperature was far below the normal range, typical of people with hypothyroidism. I was also ovulating late in my cycle, and my cycles were varying in length.

I was fortunate that a friend recommended Suzanne Connole, acupuncture specialist in New York City. Her Traditional Chinese Medicine approach combining acupuncture and Chinese herbs worked like magic. Soon my fertility cycles looked more like the ideal normal cycle, with predictable ovulation dates and consistent cycle lengths. I was amazed to see my fertility charts literally change before my eyes under Suzanne’s care. Thank you Suzanne for all you have done for me.

Dr. Sami David is the fertility guru to celebrities in New York City. He is a leading reproductive endocrinologist specializing in safe, alternative methods for treating infertility. He wrote an incredible book called “Making Babies” with Jill Blakeway, Licensed Acupuncturist and founder of The YinOva Center in New York City. The very first month that I followed the recommendations in this book, I got pregnant. I have recommended this book to friends who were struggling with fertility, and they too got pregnant within the first few months of trying it. Every woman trying to conceive should take the Making Babies online questionnaire to determine their Fertility Type. This book may just bring an end to IVF.

3. Confirm Your Pregnancy As Soon As Possible

Do NOT wait for a missed period to test for pregnancy and do NOT wait for your first pre-natal visit with your OB/GYN to test your thyroid.

I will forever remember Mary Shomon’s tip during one of my phone consultation services with her. She told me to buy the biggest box of pregnancy tests I could find. She recommended that I try to confirm my pregnancy as early as possible and to contact my doctor as soon as possible for thyroid testing. You bet I followed her instructions, and I went out and bought boxes and boxes of pregnancy tests. The store cashier must have thought I was nuts! You better believe that as soon as I started trying to conceive, my goal was to confirm my pregnancy as early as possible.

In the first part of the pregnancy, the fetus relies completely on the mother to provide the thyroid hormones for its development. In a person with healthy thyroid function, her body is able to meet the extra demands of pregnancy to provide the fetus with the necessary hormones. In a woman with thyroid dysfunction, her body may not be able to meet the increased demand for thyroid hormone during pregnancy. According to the Endocrine Society’s 2007 Clinical Guidelines for the Management of Thyroid Dysfunction during Pregnancy and Postpartum, thyroid replacement dosage usually needs to be incremented by 4-6 week gestation and may require a 30-50% increase in dosage.2

Most OB/GYN practitioners do not schedule the first prenatal visit until around 8 weeks pregnancy. Do NOT wait this long to have your thyroid tested. Insist on being seen sooner and have your thyroid tested. If you are currently under the care of a doctor for your thyroid dysfunction, contact them immediately as soon as you confirm your pregnancy.

4. Ensure Your Thyroid Levels Are Monitored Regularly Throughout Your Pregnancy

Given that I had miscarried before due to my hypothyroidism, I was naturally very concerned during this pregnancy. I remember well my doctor Dr. Adrienne Clamp giving me hope. She said, “You will not miscarry your baby to hypothyroidism on my watch!” That’s the type of thyroid doctor you need. She regularly tested my thyroid levels and maintained my TSH levels within the trimester-specific pregnancy ranges. I have no words to properly express my thanks to Dr. Clamp for all she has done for me.

Don’t just accept “you are fine” from your doctor. Ask the specific lab results and the normal lab ranges. Be thyroid aware.

According to the Guidelines of the American Thyroid Association for the Diagnosis and Management of Thyroid Disease during Pregnancy and Postpartum:3

RECOMMENDATION 2 –Trimester-specific reference ranges for TSH are recommended: first trimester, 0.1–2.5 mIU/L; second trimester, 0.2–3.0 mIU/L; third trimester, 0.3–3.0 mIU/L.

RECOMMENDATION 16 –In pregnant patients with treated hypothyroidism, maternal serum TSH should be monitored approximately every 4 weeks during the first half of pregnancy because further dose adjustments are often required.

RECOMMENDATION 17 –In pregnant patients with treated hypothyroidism, maternal TSH should be checked at least once between 26 and 32 weeks gestation.

My Miracle Boys

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism following the birth of my first son in 2006. However, my hypothyroid symptoms started well before then. I can trace my symptoms back to when I was a teenager. My symptoms got much worse after my pregnancy however I know that my thyroid was not functioning properly even before the birth of my first son. My doctors never tested my thyroid levels during my pregnancy with my first son nor did I have any idea to ask for testing. It is a miracle that he was born healthy and strong.

Have You Suffered a Miscarriage? Your Thyroid Could Be to Blame

On a cold snowy day in New York City in early 2009, I lay on a medical exam table on what would be one of the worst days of my life. I had miscarried at 12 weeks and was being prepared for a D&C. A technician had just taken an ultrasound and walked out of the room to reconfirm to the medical staff that my fetus had no heartbeat. I sprang off my bed and ran to the image on the screen. I felt my body shake and my fists clench as I stared at the image of my unborn child. What happened to my child?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid, the year following the birth of my first son in 2006. I struggled day to day with a fatigue that hit me like an avalanche of bricks. I trusted my doctors implicitly and followed their thyroid drug protocol to the letter never once thinking they might not know everything there was to know about hypothyroidism. I trusted them as the experts especially when I became pregnant that second time.

I would later learn that my Ivy League medical school trained and top awarded doctors did not know enough about hypothyroidism, especially the dangers of hypothyroidism and pregnancy. Under their care my TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), the gold standard for measuring thyroid function, reached levels far above the lab reference range and endangered my baby’s life.

What Can Cause A Miscarriage –Hypothyroidism And Pregnancy

A study presented June 2012 at The Endocrine Society’s 94th Annual Meeting in Houston recommended that all pregnant women should undergo thyroid screening in the first trimester of pregnancy. The study was conducted on 1,000 pregnant women in their first trimester in Ludhiana in Punjab, India. According to the study’s lead author Jubbin Jagan Jacob, M.D.:1

“The study found that even mild thyroid dysfunction could greatly increase the risk of serious problems. Women with mild thyroid dysfunction had double the risk of miscarriage, premature labor or low birth weight as compared to pregnant women with normal thyroid function. They also had seven times greater risk of still birth.”

In the Journal of Medical Screening, researchers in a large study of 9,400 pregnant women demonstrated that pregnant women with hypothyroidism had a second trimester miscarriage risk four times the risk of women who were not hypothyroid.2

According to a 2008 study in the Indian Journal of Medical Sciences, hypothyroidism has a statistically significant relationship with recurrent pregnancy loss in the first trimester. According to researchers:3

“Thyroid hormones are essential for the growth and metabolism of the growing fetus. Early in pregnancy the mother supplies her fetus with thyroid hormones. If the mother is hypothyroid, she cannot supply her fetus with enough thyroid hormones. Hence hypothyroidism is a risk factor for pregnancy loss.”

So why had I trusted my doctors unquestioningly?

My doctors tried to assure me there was no link between hypothyroidism and miscarriage, but my instincts told me they were wrong.

As the medical staff prepared me for my D&C that fateful day, I vowed that I would do everything in my power to research everything there was to know about hypothyroidism and take control of my health. I would never trust my doctors unquestioningly ever again.

Your Thyroid Could Be To Blame, Part 3 Miscarriage in New York City…Be Thyroid Aware, Part 4 Hashimoto’s Disease: The Danger of Thyroid Antibodies and Pregnancy, Part 5 Hypothyroid Mom’s Story of Hope: Her Miracle Babies, and Hypothyroid Mom’s Top Resources.

Did you know that the American Thyroid Association has issued multiple public health statements to warn about the dangers of hypothyroidism and pregnancy?1 Hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid, increases the risk of pregnancy complications, such as miscarriage, still birth, infertility, maternal anemia, pre-eclampsia, placental abruption, postpartum hemorrhage, premature delivery, low birth weight and deficits in intellectual development in infants?2,3 Despite the warnings, not all doctors know the ramifications of an undiagnosed or under-treated thyroid condition on a mother and her fetus, and very few patients know the facts to insist on proper testing.

I learned this the hard way. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism the year following the birth of my first son in 2006. I trusted my doctors implicitly and followed their thyroid drug protocol to the letter never once thinking they might not know everything there was to know about hypothyroidism. I trusted them as the experts especially when I became pregnant again in late 2008. This is the biggest regret of my life.

Have You Suffered a Miscarriage? Your Thyroid Could Be To Blameで述べたように、軽度の甲状腺機能障害でも、母子には深刻な悪影響があることを示す研究が山積みです。

There is ongoing debate over universal thyroid screening in pregnancy. The argument is that there is insufficient evidence at this time to recommend for or against universal thyroid testing at the first trimester visit, however, as I outlined in Part 1 of this series Have You Suffered a Miscarriage? Your Thyroid Could Be To Blame, the scientific research is mounting to show that even mild thyroid dysfunction can have serious adverse effects on mother and child.

What happens to all the women and their babies while we wait for thyroid screening to become mandatory in pregnancy?

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists issued a press release in January 2003 warning that 1 in 10 Americans suffered from thyroid disease yet half, over 13 million, remain undiagnosed.4 The Thyroid Federation International claims up to 300 million people worldwide suffer from thyroid problems, yet over half are unaware of their condition. According to TFI, thyroid problems are eight times more common in women than in men.5

Given these statistics there are pregnant women worldwide this very minute with thyroid disease but they don’t know they have it and their doctors are not aware they are at high-risk. Women will experience miscarriage, still birth, infertility, maternal anemia, pre-eclampsia, placental abruption, postpartum hemorrhage, premature delivery, and births of babies with intellectual development deficits, but they will have no idea their thyroid was to blame.

Take Charge Of Your Thyroid Health

Every woman planning to get pregnant, should get their thyroid tested pre-conception and then again as soon as possible in their first trimester of pregnancy. In early pregnancy the fetus is dependent on the mother to supply the thyroid hormones essential for brain development. If the mother is hypothyroid, she may not be able to supply her fetus with enough thyroid hormones, putting the fetus at risk. Thyroid levels change quickly in pregnancy, so do not delay.

Thyroid testing is currently not mandatory in pregnancy. If your doctor refuses thyroid testing because they do not consider it necessary in prenatal medical care, make your case. In November 2011 The American Thyroid Association updated their guidelines for the diagnosis and management of thyroid disease during pregnancy. According to the new guidelines:6

Women who are at high risk for thyroid dysfunction and may benefit from selected screening during pregnancy include those with the following attributes:

§ Women with a history of thyroid dysfunction and/or thyroid surgery.

§ Women with a family history of thyroid disease.

§ Women with a goiter.

§ Women with thyroid antibodies.

§ Women with symptoms or clinical signs suggestive of hypothyroidism. It is important to note that women with overt hypothyroidism are not invariably symptomatic.

§ Women with type I diabetes, in whom the rate of development of new onset hypothyroidism in pregnancy was 16% in one series.

§ Women with a history of either miscarriage or preterm delivery.

§ Women with other autoimmune disorders that are frequently associated with autoimmune thyroid dysfunction, including vitiligo, adrenal insufficiency, hypoparathyroidism, atrophic gastritis, pernicious anemia, systemic sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and Sjögren’s syndrome.

§ Women with infertility should have screening with TSH as part of their infertility work-up. The prevalence of hypothyroidism (overt and subclinical) among infertile women ranged from 1% to 43% in different studies.

§ Women with prior therapeutic head or neck irradiation.

§ Women with morbid obesity. A body mass index greater than or equal to 40 kg/m2 has been associated with an increased prevalence of hypothyroidism.

§ Women age 30 or older. The prevalence of hypothyroidism increases with age.

§ Women treated with amiodarone.

§ Women treated with lithium.

§ Women with a recent (in the past 6 weeks) exposure to iodinated radiological contrast agents.

Miscarriage in New York City…Be Thyroid Aware

Firstcandle.org.

“Everyone is invited to light a candle on October 15th at 7PM in ALL Time Zones, ALL Over The World. If everyone lights a candle at 7PM and keeps it burning for at least one hour, there will be a continuous WAVE OF LIGHT over the entire world on October 15th, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.” October15th.com “Because EVERY baby deserves a first birthday.” Firstcandle.org. This post is written today in memory of the baby I lost to hypothyroidism.

When I was a girl, my father would sing Frank Sinatra’s song “New York, New York”.He would sing at the top of his lungs, “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere. It’s up to you, New York, New York!” In New York City, one of the greatest cities in the world, I expected the best possible medical care. I trusted my doctors implicitly, never once thinking they might not know everything there was to know about hypothyroidism, especially the dangers of hypothyroidism and pregnancy.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, a low thyroid, following the birth of my first son. When I became pregnant for the second time, I followed my thyroid drug protocol to the letter never once doubting my Ivey League medical school trained and top awarded NYC doctors.

In my first trimester, I was overcome by a sick, tired, weak feeling. I recall the night I told my husband, “I am worried that something is wrong with the baby.” My body was whispering a warning to me, but I trusted my doctors and didn’t question them when they responded that my thyroid levels were safe for pregnancy and that it was normal in early pregnancy to be tired. Somehow this “sick, tired, weak” feeling didn’t seem normal but I disregarded my body’s warning. In hindsight, I was also too sick and exhausted to do the research to help myself. I miscarried at 12 weeks pregnancy.

Frank Sinatra’s song resonates with me now more than ever. If a miscarriage due to hypothyroidism can happen in New York City, it can happen anywhere.

TSH Levels in Pregnancy

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is a measure taken from a blood sample to test thyroid functioning. High TSH levels above the reference range are interpreted as an underactive thyroid, known as hypothyroidism. Low TSH levels below the reference range are interpreted as an overactive thyroid, hyperthyroidism.

Guidelines of the American Thyroid Association for the Diagnosis and Management of Thyroid Disease During Pregnancy and Postpartum were updated in 2011. They recommend the following trimester-specific reference ranges for TSH in pregnancy:1

TSH 0.1 – 2.5 mIU/L

First Trimester, TSH 0.1 – 2.5 mIU/L

TSH 0.2 – 3.0 mIU/L

Second Trimester, TSH 0.2 – 3.0 mIU/L

TSH 0.2 – 3.0 mIU/L

Third Trimester, TSH 0.3 – 3.0 mIU/L

As published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism in 2010, a study conducted on a large cohort size of 4123 women in Southern Italy revealed that higher TSH levels (between 2.5 and 5.0 mIU/L) increased the risk of miscarriage by 69%. This study provided strong physiological evidence to support defining the TSH upper limit of normal in the first trimester of pregnancy to 2.5 mIU/L.2

(Higher Maternal TSH levels in pregnancy are associated with increased risk for miscarriage, fetal or neonatal deathという研究を発表しています。

The European Journal of Endocrinology published a study in 2009 entitled “Higher Maternal TSH levels in pregnancy are associated with increased risk for miscarriage, fetal or neonatal death”. In a cohort of 2497 pregnant Dutch women without overt thyroid dysfunction, the incidence of child loss increased significantly with increasing TSH levels during early pregnancy.3

The 2007 Endocrine Society’s clinical guidelines for the Management of Thyroid Dysfunction during Pregnancy and Postpartum includes the following recommendations:4

§ If hypothyroidism has been diagnosed before pregnancy, thyroid hormone replacement medication dosage should be adjusted to reach a TSH level not higher than 2.5 mIU/L prior to pregnancy.

§ If overt hypothyroidism is diagnosed during pregnancy, thyroid function tests should be normalized as rapidly as possible to TSH levels of less than 2.5 mIU/L in the first trimester (or 3 mIU/L in the second and third trimester).”

Throughout my first trimester, my TSH remained higher than the above recommended 2.5 mIU/L, soaring as high as 10.0 mIU/L. My doctor said that everything was fine and that TSH was only a concern in pregnancy above 10.0 mIU/L.

Wait…rewind…yes you read that correctly.

My doctor was not concerned about TSH levels below 10.0 in pregnancy, because she was not aware of the danger to pregnancy with a TSH at that high range, and I wasn’t aware of it either.

According to a study published in Thyroidin 2010, three waves of mail surveys were distributed to 1601 Wisconsin health care providers with a history of providing obstetric care. Survey participants were members of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists or the American Academy of Family Physicians. The study determined that ONLY 11.5%of providers actually read the 2007 Endocrine Society’s “Guidelines on the Management of Thyroid Dysfunction During Pregnancy and Postpartum.”5

In another study a survey was distributed to 260 surgeons attending the 2009 American Association of Endocrine Surgeons’ meeting. ONLY 23% had read the 2007 Endocrine Society’s guidelines. Reading the guidelines was associated with a significantly greater likelihood of the doctors informing patients of the TSH guidelines for pregnancy, however I repeat only 23%actually read the guidelines.6

If only my doctors had just read the Endocrine Society’s 2007 clinical guidelines, my child would be alive today. What an unnecessary and tragic loss. I can’t go back in time no matter how much I wish it, however I can make sure this never happens to anyone else ever again. I can do everything in my power to drive awareness about the dangers of hypothyroidism and pregnancy.

Elie Wiesel said, “Whoever survives a test, whatever it may be, must tell the story. That is his duty.”Hypothyroid Mom is my story. I feel deep within me that it is my duty to share it, so that not one more child will be unnecessarily lost to hypothyroidism. Please take a look at Hypothyroid Mom’s first YouTube video and help build awareness.

Hashimoto’s Disease: The Danger of Thyroid Antibodies and Pregnancy

In 1990, a significant correlation between high levels of thyroid antibodies and an increased rate of miscarriage was first reported in the scientific literature.1 Where are we at a generation later?2 Despite the 20 years of compelling research confirming and expanding upon the initial finding, many doctors do not test a pregnant woman for thyroid antibodies, and few patients know to ask for proper testing.

Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune condition in which the body attacks and destroys its own thyroid gland. In a healthy immune system, antibodies act as the body’s army to detect and destroy invaders not normally present in the body, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. In the case of Hashimoto’s disease, a defective immune system wreaks havoc on the body by directing antibodies against its own thyroid gland as if it is a foreign invader. Although Hashimoto’s is the number one cause of hypothyroidism in the United States, it is a tragically overlooked disease in the health care system.

You may have Hashimoto’s disease and not even know it.

According to the American Thyroid Association, 10 to 20% of all pregnant women in the first trimester of pregnancy are positive for Hashimoto’s antibodies, but they are euthyroid. Euthyroid means they have normal thyroid functioning based on their TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) level, the most common measurement of thyroid function. Their thyroid function in early pregnancy appears to be normal and they may even feel well, all the while their body is silently attacking and destroying their own thyroid gland. A significant percentage of these women will however develop a TSH above the trimester-specific pregnancy reference range by the third trimester, endangering the life of their fetus.3

By testing TSH alone, thyroid antibodies in Hashimoto’s may be missed, and your doctor may have no idea your baby is at risk.

Consider for a moment the number of babies lost to Hashimoto’s disease just because doctors fail to perform a simple blood test. Hashimoto’s is confirmed by lab tests for these two antibodies:

1. Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOAb)

2. Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TgAb)

Thyroid Antibodies and Miscarriage

Researchers in a 2011 study published in the British Medical Journalconducted a systematic review of 31 studies involving 12,126 women that assessed the association between thyroid autoantibodies and miscarriage. Of the 31 studies, 28 separate studies found thyroid antibodies increased the risk of miscarriage by 290%. According to researchers:4

“In the developed world, thyroid autoimmunity is the main cause of hypothyroidism, which itself results in poor obstetric outcomes. Even in women with biochemically normal thyroid function, studies have reported an association between the presence of thyroid autoantibodies, particularly thyroid peroxidase antibodies and adverse pregnancy outcomes, including miscarriage, preterm birth, and adverse neurodevelopmental sequelae in children.”

Women with Hashimoto’s who are not receiving thyroid treatment require monitoring for hypothyroidism during pregnancy. TSH should be evaluated every 4 weeks during the first half of pregnancy and at least once between 26 and 32 weeks gestation. TSH levels above the trimester-specific pregnancy reference range should be treated (first trimester, 0.1-2.5 mIU/L; second trimester, 0.2-3.0 mIU/L; third trimester, 0.3-3.0 mIU/L).

According to Dr. David Clark, DC Functional Neurologist:6

1. As a mother, if you have TPO antibodies that means you have a real risk for becoming hypothyroid. Hypothyroidism itself can cause miscarriages and premature birth.

2. If you have TPO antibodies, you have ONE autoimmune disorder, and your immune system is attacking ONE tissue…it can now easily attack something else, like a developing fetus.

The lack of awareness about Hashimoto’s disease is pervasive. Do not assume your doctor is aware of the dangers of Hashimoto’s and pregnancy. Take charge of your thyroid health and insist on thyroid antibody testing.

Nobody called for the need on evacuation of Fukushima children at March 2013 NY Symposium hosted by Dr. Caldicott!
Two year after Fukushima accident on March 11&12 2013, I attended "The Medical and Ecological Consequences of the Fukushima Nuclear Accident" in NYC by Dr. Helen Caldicott Foundation.  You can see the archive videos for this in the following.  http://www.totalwebcasting.com/view/?id=hcf# If you click on the speaker's name, you can see that person's speech immediately on the video.  However, closing remark of Dr. Helen Caldicott was omitted for some unknown reason and here it is. http://vimeo.com/70450126  (I was a bit dissapointed that she did not mention about Fukushima children's thyroid abnormalities even though I sent her my document to her weeks prior to this symposium and she told me that she has read my letter, even citing the contaminated canned fish exporting story to developing country for school lunch...http://savekidsjapan.blogspot.jp/2013/01/open-letter-to-un-on-health-hazards.html)
On Day 2, thanks to Ms. Kazko K, along with some others, I was able to talk about the health hazards that has already been emerged in Japan using lunch time of the symposium.  As for this session, as soon as I get the video and audio data, I will upload it on this page.

(The Medical and Ecological Consequences of the Fukushima Nuclear Accident)と題された国際会議に参加してきました。

http://www.totalwebcasting.com/view/?id=hcf#

I had been sending Japan's health hazards report after Fukushima accident to the United Nations and also almost all the speakers at the conference..  http://savekidsjapan.blogspot.jp/2013/01/open-letter-to-un-on-health-hazards.html

Among these international speakers, there were some people who showed concerned toward me and my son's health conditions and sent me some kind letter.

It was a surprise for me that even those who have been active anti-nuke/anti-radiation exposure experts did not know the ongoing health hazards taking place in and around Fukushima.

There were those who commended my report saying, "Your report is a totally new one of its kinds based on massive information including Japanese history and important people. Congratulations! "
Congratulations!」

(However, I did not write the report to the UN for being commended with Congratulations! for my self, but I wrote the report for saving children in Fukushima and wanted the information known to the world!  That was part of the reason I went all the way to the UN spending money for myself and my son as well!
Congratulations!

BTW, not during the official session, but on the lunch break of Day 2, I had a chance talking about the health hazards in and around Fukushima.   On the Day 1 lunch break, there were some former navy soldiers who have got detrimental health hazards after Tomocachi Operation (The Navy Vessel Ronald Reagan went off the coast of Fukushima after the accident.  The military servicemen were not aware of the radiation risks while senior officers were taking iodine tablets.)

I always feel that the movement against radiation hazards should be focusing on health hazards, which had never been discussed during the official hours of this conference.  As I had already sent my letter to the UN to Dr. Caldicott as well, I went to see her during a break time to plead on mentioning about health issue in Fukushima.  I confirmed that Dr. Caldicott read my letter and encouraged me to speak my question and comment during the session, but all the questions were predetermined by the organizer and I was never pointed out to talk in the session.

It was good that I was able to talk during the lunch session.  When I started to talk, everybody became quiet and listened to me quite seriously.

Kazuko kindly mentioned to me, "Some of the audience told me that Mari's session was the best."  Some people also commented, "Your statement was remarkable."  I am not writing this for being boastful, by the way.

The most important thing should be the health hazard issue.  In Chernobyl, the most important issue on health has been ignored by authorities including the UN, which even worsened the situation with drastic increase of victims, which is about to be repeated in Fukushima!

I think more adults should speak up in order to protect children, babies and next generations!!!

March 12, 2013 NY Academy of Medicine,

Lunch Time Session Speech made by Mari Takenouchi

Hello, everyone. Thank you for giving me this opportunity. I really appreciate this conference very much, and I’ve been learning a lot through excellent and esteemed speakers. But I felt one most important thing was missing. That is what is happening in Fukushima and East Japan. Actually, already there have been people who have been showing symptoms. In the last session, there was a professor who was talking about the immediate emergency of symptoms that has been happening in Fukushima.

We have heard a lot of stories of children who got nosebleeing, vomiting, diarrhea and rashes all over. It was so common and people started to talk about it right after the accident. But now people got used to it, and they don’t even talk about it. And as the previous doctor who made a speech has said, government sided doctors on the top of medical societies in Japan are trying to conceal these kinds of symptoms are happening apparently because of radiation effects.

And they are saying on top of these thingsonly about one or two months ago I made a phone call to the Society of Medicine in Japan and their answer was ‘We haven’t found any health hazards so far caused by radiation.’That’s their attitude. I think they are criminals, because I have seen a lot of people who have been complaining about nosebleeing, diarrhea, and vomiting and whatsoever, and on top of that, I myself have experienced such kind of …not exactly the same but, let me explain.
I was in Tokyo and not in Fukushima, more than 200 kilometers away from the nuclear power plant. Since I do translation as well, and I have translated three radiation-related books, and since I knew how dangerous it could be, I evacuated from Tokyo to Okinawa. And the timing of the evacuation was really bad for me because I evacuated in the afternoon of March 15th and maybe some of you might know that in the morning of March 15th, a very thick radioactive cloud was passing through Tokyo, and you would be surprised, per cubic meter more than 1000 becquerel of radiation cloud was passing, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government was measuring that real time.
They were measuring the real time radiation particles from the 13th; and from the evening of the 14ththey were watching the figure going up, but they didn’t let the residents know about it all. And so was in Fukushima and people only in a very very small circles were to told to be evacuate or stay indoors, but this very thick radioactive plume was moving around, and even though some organization, that organization was the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Industry Bureau had this precise machine measuring the particles, they didn’t let the residents know.
And I didn’t know either, of course, and I was riding a bicycle with my one-year old boy, and there was no symptom on that day, and I didn’t know anything about it. But about one month later, my boy and I suddenly gothigh fever, and my fever was more than 103 degrees Fahrenheit, or in Celsius, more than 39 degrees, eight days continuously, never dropping.
And I went to the doctor, and I took a flu test. I didn’t have any flu. I had an X-ray – nothing; and after that I got this phlegm, very…yellowish and thick, phlegm, I am sorry you are eating (laughter from the audience), but anyway, it kept coming out, and even now I have this kind of stuck-phlegmfeeling, even now, even after two years. So I went to the nose-throat doctor quite recently and the doctor brought a tube into my nose. I am not allergic to anything but he found some inflammation between my nostrils and throat, and that was the reason for irritation.
And my boy, oh my boy was so healthy until that accident. He was one year and four months old, and he had never had any fever by catching cold, and since I am a translator, I sometime translate at home, and I took him to daycare where many children were playing around, and of course some children got colds, but my boy was fine, never a single cold until one year and four months old.
But at the same time, when I started to have high fever, he also had high fever, about 101 degrees Fahrenheit, more than 38 degrees, on and off, thirteen times in three months. I was so shocked you know, and nervous, and I immediately realized that oh, we were exposed. And I somehow checked the internet and found out that the Tokyo Metropolitan Government real time measurement figures, and I was like freaking-out, because more than 1000 Becquerel per cubic meter of air we have inhaled!
About some months later the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced only on the internet that Tokyo metropolitan residents had inhaled 3600 Bq of particles, radioactive particles in March alone. So, even Tokyo people have been exposed to radiation, that’s for sure. Of course there is a big difference if you are outside or inside, and actually I have heard a lot of stories from mothers who got sick like me, and whose children got sick and they went to the doctors, and they checked the thyroid, and lots and lots of children and even mothers have cysts.
I myself got my thyroid tested. I have two small, small cysts in my thyroid, and my boy has countless very minute cysts all over. And actually this test was conducted by Dr. A, my dear friend doctor, and she is actually working in Osaka, the west side of Japan. She checked Osaka children, and almost no children there have minutesized thyroid cysts; but when she checked children from Tokyo, many children had them.

*In March 2014, my son and I got rediagnosed and found out that my boy's thyroid was OK (what a relief!) but my thyroid was swallen double the normal size and I had Hashimoto's Disease.
So what does this mean? I think this is the most important thing. Even Tokyo kids are showing abnormality. Of course, Dr. A went to Fukushima as well, and just showed you how bad it is through pictures…Some of you must have missed it, so please ask her to show the pictures. Fukushima children are in danger really.
So what we have to do now is to find some way to evacuate these kids tosafe area; otherwise, I am sure that lots and lots of kids will be –from Chernobyl that we know that it’s not only cancer but all sorts of diseases …and I myself and very worried about lung cancer and since we have inhaled, so manynumber of people have inhaled even in Tokyo 3600 Bq, and I heard some stories about diabetes.
Diabetes is getting high even among children in Fukushima. What does that mean? And also, heart anomaly rate has been increased in Ibaragi Prefecture, just below Fukushima Prefecture, among children, junior high school kids. So it is already coming out
So I think this side of story is the most urgent subject. And unless we do something, we cannot save children’s lives. We don’t need a study. We just want a way to evacuate kids. Thank you very much.

Post Script:

After this presentation, I have been continuouly slandered by Ms. Yuri Hiranuma @YuriHiranuma who attended this conference.  I made this presentation on the request of Kazko and the health hazard issues are real in East Japan, which I believe is most important.  Ms. Hiranuma is well informed about radiation issue and even was an interpreter when Dr. Caldicott came to Japan.  I really do not understand why she slanders me for my making above presentation and I feel quite regretful.

http://koukaishitsumon.blogspot.jp/2013/10/did-you-read-letter-on-japan-times.html

Post Script 2

However, I got to know that my visiting to NY was at least meaningful for the following person.  A US school related worker who obviously heard my speech wrote an open letter to Mr. Hirofumi Shimomura, Minister of Education, regarding the symptoms such as vomitting and nosebleeding among the US students who visited Tohoku area of Japan.  The person recommended the postponing of the program to Japan, after realizing that the symptoms could be caused by radiation. http://koukaishitsumon.blogspot.jp/2013/10/did-you-read-letter-on-japan-times.html
